北海道と言えども一般のスキー場はゴールデンウィークまでの営業が限界です。
しかし今シーズンは色々なご縁があって、その時期を過ぎてからも、バックカントリースキー（B.C）を楽しんでいます。

とはいえ冬山も含めB.Cするのは５，６年振り。10年以上前に購入したウォークモード付のスキーブーツは、還暦に近づきつつある今の私には重すぎて、長い登坂をイメージできない…なんて話をすると、B.C好きのTさんが昨シーズンまで使用していたB.C用のスキーブーツを下さると言う(マイブーツよりもサイズは２センチほど大きいが、バックル強めに締めれば何とかなるか…）。何せ私が使っていたブーツと比べ、片足で700g軽い。数時間登坂することを考えると、脚への負担は雲泥の差。ありがたく頂戴し、久々のB.Cにトライすることにしました。

TさんのB.C仲間とご一緒させていただき、先ずはゴールデンウィーク直前にニセコ山系へ。これが天気も景色も素晴らしく、斜面も爽快そのもの。登坂の辛さを忘れさせてくれる絶妙な行程が「また行きたい！」とB.Cの楽しさを思い出させてくれました。

そして今回は大雪山系へ。登りが4時間以上と聞き、ちょっと身構えたものの、印象的な山の名前にも惹かれ、再びTさんチームとご一緒させていただきました。
休憩時間も含めると、結局登りに5時間以上を要しましたが、行程中の景色は正に「絶景！」。以下にアップロードした動画を是非フルサイズ表示でご覧いただき、非日常の風景を感じてください。
登坂中に出会った別のグループの「ここが天国ですよ」とのコメントは言い得て妙でした。

Even in Hokkaido, most ski resorts are only able to remain open until the Golden Week holidays.　This season, however, thanks to a series of fortunate connections, I’ve been able to continue skiing beyond that period by enjoying backcountry skiing (B.C.).

That said, it had been five or six years since my last backcountry trip. The ski boots with walk mode that I bought more than a decade ago now feel far too heavy for me, especially as I edge closer to sixty, and I could hardly imagine climbing for hours in them anymore. When I mentioned this, Mr. T—an avid backcountry skier—offered me the pair of B.C. boots he had been using until last season. They were about two centimeters larger than my own boots, but I figured tightening the buckles firmly would make them workable. In any case, compared with my old pair, they were 700 grams lighter per foot. Considering several hours of uphill climbing, the difference in strain on the legs is enormous. Grateful for the generosity, I decided to give backcountry skiing another try after a long hiatus.

This time, we headed into the Daisetsuzan mountain range. Hearing that the ascent would take more than four hours made me slightly apprehensive, but I was also drawn to the evocative mountain names, and joined Mr. T and his backcountry companions for the trip.

Including breaks, the climb ultimately took more than five hours, but the scenery along the way was truly breathtaking. A comment from another group we encountered during the ascent—“This is heaven”—captured the experience perfectly.

白と青の美しいコントラストは視界に入りきらない迫力をあわせ持つ.　広大な雪原の上を雲の影だけが静かに流れていく風景はこの世とは思えぬ絶景. 　まさに「天国」という表現が相応しい.
